- Sony Computer Entertainment has been receiving positive buzz from its mainstream showcase of PlayStation Vita hardware and games at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012). With its February 22nd U.S. launch fast approaching, Sony is rolling out hands-on PS Vita showcases in major cities across the country. In addition, the game publisher has partnered with Playboy’s 2008 Cyber Girl of the Year Jo Garcia to host eight parties in eight cities between January and March. Garcia, who created and runs Playboy’s Gamer Next Door site, talks about the PS Vita and how she’s working with Sony in this exclusive interview.
How are you working with Sony for the PS Vita launch?
I’m going to start touring with Sony in mid-January through March with the PS Vita. It’s a huge push in all the major cities. We’re throwing eight parties in eight cities across the United States, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami and Austin for South by Southwest.
What will you be doing while on this tour?
It’s all about showing people what the PS Vita lifestyle is about. I’ll be showing people the device as well as the games. I’m also shooting a promo video with Sony about the device.
Will there be Playboy Playmates at these parties?
I know I’m in every city. If there are local Playboy girls, we’re going to invite them to come and hang out and party with us. But they won’t be there promoting the product. They won’t be trained to do it.
At CES we saw a lot of new tablets with gaming capabilities, what are your thoughts about the impact that could have on PS Vita?
This is how I feel about that. If you’re a gamer, you don’t really play hardcore videogames on tablets. As much as they have great games like Angry Birds, I’m just not a huge fan of playing a shooter game on an iPad. It just doesn’t work as good. It’s cumbersome. It’s big. Leave gaming devices to gaming. Just look at how the Nintendo DS has held up so well for the type of device it is. As far as the portable devices, it usually outsells the Sony PlayStation devices and I don’t know why that is. If you compare them as far as graphics, capabilities and the buttons and all that other stuff, I think that Sony devices tend to outperform those of the Nintendo devices.
What are your thoughts on the PS Vita?
Touch screens have been big with phones and tablets and Nintendo DS and now PS Vita. Now that Sony’s bringing out a touch capable device, it’s going to set them in the same category as everybody else. And people that are looking for gaming devices that are touch-sensitive and want something portable that they can stick in their bag and go on a flight with and play a videogame, they’ll now lean more now towards the Vita. The Vita does pretty much everything a tablet does, it’s just on a smaller screen. It has 3G and Wi-Fi. You can play your touch app style games off of it. On top of that, you’ll be able to download full HD videogames, which for a gamer is heaven. If they’re going to carry a device for gaming, they’re going to be carrying one of those. I really believe people will want this device. It’s also a lot cheaper than a lot of tablets these days. |
