- A 10-year-old boy has been arrested after taking his dad’s Maserati for a joyride in Hong Kong and crashing it.
The American boy grabbed the keys to the Maserati GranTurismo from an unlocked drawer in his father’s apartment, revved the engine and took off down the street, according to a report in the South China Morning Post. The boy’s father paid HK$1.6 million ($200,000) for the two-door Italian sports car in 2009.
The boy hit a vehicle in a car park and continued for around 300 metres before stopping at the side of a busy road, at which time a passer-by called the police.
“Police arrested the 10-year-old for driving without a licence and taking a conveyance without authority under the theft ordinance,” a police spokeswoman said.
The boy was released on bail, and police said there was no indication he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
The maximum punishment for the offence is seven years’ imprisonment and a fine, although the boy is likely to get off without charge because of his age.
